A healing garden, a wellness center with the looks and appeal of a classic, traditional hotel. This was the theme htat the owners wished to convey for this 44,000 square foot facility. The building houses state of the art cardiology and oncology suites with a large chemotherapy room. Creating a very comfortable and warm atmosphere was important with cancer patients staying for 3 to 6 hours for treatment. The center’s environment evolved into the look and feel of a lodge with design solutions that included brining the stone façade of the building into the lobby, warm burgundy and deep blue colors and extensive use of cherry wood. Further enhancing the comfortable feel was the use of sconces as proch lights by every exam room and office, coffered ceilings and fireplaces in some of the reception areas. Signage and custom light fixtures on the greeter desk and the sconces attest to the level of detail required in creating a true Wellness Center. Even with a furniture and finished budget of $460,000 some existing furniture was blended with new. CUMC incorporates the most up to date medical equipment with a design solution that promotes wellness and comfort along with materials that are easy to maintain and timeless in their appeal. The staff moved into the facility and started treating patients mid-November, 2003. Artwork including photography by one of the doctors along with plants make this truly a healing garden. Daryl Smith, CUMC Cardiology Administrator and the Owner’s Representative during the design process states: “Our building has provided our patients with a more friendly, inviting environment that reflects our commitment to our patients. The design reflects this commitment to the smallest detail. It has greatly enhanced our ability to ease stress that often accompanies the illnesses for which we provide care. Nearly every patient we have seen in our new building has commented on the big difference it has made for them.”
