The Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory for Music and Theatre is an addition to The Jewitt Center for the Performing Arts at Westminster College completed in July 2004. The addition adds 34,000 square feet to the existing 18,000 square foot facility increasing the building's capacity to 52,000 square feet with an overall cost for the addition of $6.5 million.

The Jewitt Center housed the College's theatre and music departments and The Courage Theatre, aimed at theatrical and musical performances. With the growth of both programs, the College wanted to expand the facility to provide performance, classroom, rehearsal and support spaces for both departments and include an art gallery for the visual art departments. The addition includes a Recital Hall, Art Galleries , Black Box Theatre, Recording Studio/Rehearsal Hall, Practice Room Suite, Musical Tech Lab, Classrooms, Theatre Shop, and Faculty Offices.

The Jewitt Center was originally built in 1991. The addition creates a gathering space and vertical circulation between the existing and new structure, highlighting both the existing and new theatres around a central axis: the grand staircase. Art galleries off either side of the building's entry greet the art patron and enhance their visual senses prior to attending a vocal, musical or theatrical performance. The art galleries extend throughout the upper floor of the space making the building a canvas for student art and performance.

The new conservatory needed to respect the integrity of the existing structure while merging with the new, opening and bringing light to the space. The introduction of natural light through curtain walls at the art galleries, and clerestory windows down the main corridors of the upper levels enhance the visual experience. Limestone was selected in two tones to lighten the space and act as the main flooring throughout the upper gallery and performance pre-function spaces. An aluminum recessed base was designed to allow the walls to float with art work. Quartered figured Ash in its natural finish was selected to add a refining touch to the wood and enhance the neutral background.

The Vieve Gore Recital Hall was conceptually designed to reflect the interior of a wooden instrument enhancing the instrumental and vocal performances it was designed to amplify. The ash was accented in the recital hall with the use of natural bosse which highlights the ash details.

At the lower level of the facility, the rehearsal hall, practice rooms and the black box theatre are housed. Wanting to keep the finishes in their raw state to reflect the purpose of a black box theatre, the flooring became polished concrete with the same recessed aluminum base. At the entry to the black box theatre we took the ash and ebonized it to complement the purpose of the theatre.

The addition of the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory completes Westminster College 's goal of enhancing the visual and performing arts in the Salt Lake Valley .
