The new 240,000 square foot library doubled the collections space of the original library. It was designed as a landmark in the city's Civic Core, creating lively interactive public spaces currently missing in the downtown area. The facility features a triangular-shaped Main Building, an adjacent rectangular Administration Building, a glass-enclosed Urban Room and a Public Piazza, each a separate and distinct response to the program requirements.

  • The Main (triangular) Building houses book stacks and computer technology.
  • Administrative Areas are organized horizontally and vertically to provide total interaction for all librarians to all areas.
  • The Urban Room acts as a living room for the city. It was conceived as a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight, and is a pivotal point of visual orientation.
  • The Public Piazza is an extension of the Urban Room to the exterior. This piazza is the heart of the 10 acre block that is a central city park.
  • An iconic curving, sloping, leaning Walkable Wall containing shops and food establishments at its base weaves the site together. The wall defines both the Urban Room and the piazza and provides a connection to the existing library building (which will become an arts/science center). The Wall houses multi-level reading aeras, and also provides steps leading to the dramatic roof garden a top the library building.

Multi-level reading areas along the transparent southern façade look onto the Piazza, the city and the 11,000 foot mountain range beyond. At night the glass façade, lit from within, is mirrored in the crescent-shaped reflecting pool extending into the piazza.

The Library's goal of creating a lively, interactive destination for the capital city's patrons has come to fruition.
