Name: David Morris and Kevin Woolley
Firm: GSBS pc
Client: Utah County Health and Justice Building

Client Objective:

The featured project is a new building to house Utah County government offices and courts. The client requested that the building architecture mimic the style of Provo 's existing downtown buildings. The client also wanted a prominent building that will last for generations. As a government building the unstated object, was to be cost effective so the balancing of materials with cost was important.

Design Solutions:

  • The buildings exterior was designed to mimic the random and staggered lines of a city with block connected but individual buildings. We continued this random and staggered design idea to the interior space by creating several square and rectangular patterns. The two primary patterns were used in the main corridor. The patterns were repeated in the stone floor, the cherry wood wall panels, the glass and metal railings, and the lighting fixtures and wall sconces. The patterns were used throughout the building to give continuity as colors and finished material changed.
  • With various departments occupying the building, different colors and materials were used to create a unique feeling in each department's space. Cherry wood was incorporated into the courtroom millwork to add a dignified and stately environment. Acoustic panels were also included to provide the required sound privacy. In the health areas warm greens were used to help create a warm and comfortable atmosphere. The training room needed to be multi-functional. A moveable divided wall with acoustic ratings was added to the center to allow for versatile use of the space along with acoustic panels on the fixed walls. In all areas, as much natural light as possible was incorporated into the design.
