Name: Summer Bell
School: Brigham Young University - Idaho
Project Name: XAIBAI

Project Description:
This project is a conceptual design. The first floor of a three-story building is to be converted into an art gallery and restaurant. This project places emphasis on the importance of selecting interior finishes that are sensitive to the function of the space and reflect the historical / contemporary style selected at random. The style selected was Deconstructivism. The restaurant will serve Oriental food and the entire space will be targeted toward singles.

Special attention should be made when selecting the interior finishes for the Art Gallery as not to conflict with the displays. The space should be conducive to different types of art on display—whether it is large wall murals, sculpture, or small objects on display. The artwork may be classic one month and contemporary the next.

Lighting is also critical. It is important that the lighting levels be period accurate, sufficient, and flexible, and not too harsh for the art displays.

Biography:
I would not have anticipated when I was a small child that my future would entail the pursuit of interior design as a career. At that point in my life, my only career goals concerned being a famous dancer or singer. As I grew into a teenager I put forth a great amount of thought into what my future career would entail. At age 16, I wondered what profession was specifically meant for me. I spent some time confused and concerned, pondering which of the upcoming avenues I should pursue. One day, a fascinating question was proposed by a friend of mine: "What is the most valuable lesson that you learned growing up?" I knew the answer immediately. The most important lesson I had ever been taught was that characteristics of a hard worker are irreplaceable. My father taught me that anything can be accomplished with a sincere desire and a great deal of effort. This concept applied to my goals and aspirations and assisted me in the realization of the endless possibilities that lay ahead of me. Among those possibilities was the prospect of interior design.

I have always had an interest in interior design because of the remarkable effect that an interior has on its occupants. I chose to pursue interior design in my junior year of high school. I understood the business would be demanding and very time consuming, but still a rewarding line of business. I was hesitant to pursue the profession at first, and wondered if I was capable of pursuing such a career. However, I believed that with hard work and dedication, I could truly become an interior designer if that was my desire. I am still striving to increase my knowledge of the profession every day so that I can eventually accomplish my goal.

I am convinced that the best skill to have in life is that of hard work. I have noticed that my greatest successes occur when I completely devote myself to a cause. If I learn from my failures and improve upon my successes with the values I learned as a child, I believe I can embark on wonderful endeavors for my future.
